Mercy in the Shadowland
Words & Music by Randy Stonehill and Jeff Hurtgen

We are pilgrims in the shadowland
And there’s so much we don’t understand
But this restlessness keeps reminding us
There’s a better a land the city of our souls

We see dimly through our clouded sight
But we’re trusting in a different light
It burns faithfully where the eyes can’t see
But it leads us where our hearts were meant to go

Mercy in the shadowland
It’s love that holds our trembling hands
Deliver us from sinking sands we pray
The road is steep to kingdom come
But we’ll keep walking toward the sun
Until at last these shadows melt away

There is music on the celestial wind
And it whispers to us deep within
As that angel’s song guides us on and on
We remember that we never are alone
If we listen to those gentle strains
We’ll hear Heaven calling out our names
All creation sings and the echo rings
One day we will know as we are known

Mercy in the shadowland
It’s love that holds our trembling hands
Deliver us from sinking sands we pray
The road is steep to kingdom come
But we’ll keep walking toward the sun
Until at last these shadows melt away

Though we languish for a season in this lonely place
Where our darkness caused a Holy God to hide His face
We will find our rest if we’ll just confess our sad estate
Oh Jesus said, “The poor in spirit shall walk through Heaven’s gate

And it’s Mercy in the shadowland
It’s love that holds our trembling hands
Deliver us from sinking sands we pray
The road is steep to kingdom come
But we’ll keep walking toward the sun
Until at last these shadows melt away
