I sing for the Shepherd who’s gone to the greatest of lengths
To rescue His sheep who’ve mistaken their weakness for strength.
Rebels and fools in a desolate land,
And so it goes with the ways of a man,
Till we learn that our names are engraved in the palms of God’s hands.
This astonishing kindness
This love took our hearts by surprise. It reached down to find us.
In our fear and our pain and our pride,
We were under a spell like some cloud of hysterical blindness,
But mercy remembered our names,
Bringing hope like a cool, healing rain.
There is no other way to explain
This astonishing kindness.
Formed in God’s image but granted a will of our own,
We were born for communion that angels could never have known.
Inclined to behave like some petulant child,
We lost our vision, deceived and beguiled,
But we’re called back again to a romance so holy and wild.
Beauty unspeakable, power unstoppable
Truth that’s unchangeable, mercy immeasurable….
In those dark hours on the cross there was light breaking through.
“Behold,” the Messiah declares, “I make everything new”.
And nature bows down and its laws are reversed
Death is the door to the soul’s second birth,
Love is the power of God that moves heaven and earth.
This astonishing kindness…

O Breath of God come in and dwell
Please make my aching heart Your home and use me well For you created me and named me as Your own
To know the wonder of Your love and make it known
O Breath of God teach me your ways
That I might serve you in these precious, fleeting days Now I am sure of this, if I’ve learned nothing else Until I live for you I do not live myself
Father, Father lift me on Your wings Show me why the angels sing
O Breath of God I'm tired and cold
And all the dreams I've chased have left me feeling old But You've been waiting here and now I understand Please let me fall into Your loving, nail-scarred hands
